Year 3 – Detailed Drawing

It is wonderful to see many students in Year 3 taking a lot more pride in their work. This is especially noticeable in the care and attention to detail they are displaying when drawing. We have been discussing settlers in Sitges in topic work, and in literacy we have been writing book reviews. Patricia, Kuba, Elisabeth, Julio and Finn have taken the time to draw some detailed pictures to accompany their work. Year 3 – Rocks in science

This week we started our new topic in Science, Rocks and Soils. We have investigated the characteristics of different rocks and identified particular purposes they would suit. For example, we agreed slate is useful for roof tiles as it splits into thin pieces easily and is permeable (does not let water pass). Chalk definitely would not be suitable because it wears away easily. Later in the week we sorted rocks into various groups. Look at our photos and see if you can work out how we grouped them!

Year 3´s busy week

This week Year 3 has been looking at playscripts. The students had fun acting out various plays and were given the challenge to change some traditional stories into playscripts. In Numeracy, we have been multiplying 2 digit numbers. At the start of the week many were a little nervous approaching these equations but by Friday they were eager to complete these independently.

Well done Year 3! In Science, we completed our final investigation with plants. We put the stem of celery in a jar of water with blue food colouring and left it to sit for 1 day. The next day we observed the celery leaves were turning blue. When we cut it into pieces, we discovered small veins, like in our bodies, that carried the blue water up the stem to the leaves.

Congratulations to Maria, Patricia and Ania for receiving certificates in assembly today. Also, congratulations Year 3 for receiving the best line certificate for the 2nd time! Keep up the terrific work!

Year 3 Science – Plants need sunlight to grow

In Science we have been investigating how plants grow well. We planted bean seeds and investigated how the location would affect their growth.

Finn and her plant are looking a little sad because it was growing in the cupboard where there was no sunlight. Alvaro, Julio, Kuba and their plant are ok as the plant was in the classroom where it could easily access some sunlight. Joel and his plant are looking very happy and healthy because the plant was growing on on the nice warm windowsill in the sun. The poor seeds in the freezer did not grow at all because it was too cold and had no sunlight.

Year 3 Shadow Science

Year 3 have just started their final Science unit on Light and Shadow. We are studying how light travels in straight lines from the light source. We went to the patio in the morning to draw around our shadows and then went back in the afternoon to see how the shadows had moved. We now need to learn why this happens…….

Take a Seat by Year 3

In the final part of last term Year 3 had to design a seat as part of their homework. Many of the children made wonderful chairs and were very proud of their creations. The children have learnt how to sketch a 3D chair and after many practices have the have painted their chair in the style of Van Gogh. Make sure you check out our display in the corridor outside Year 3.

Year 3 loves World Maths Day

On Wednesday Year 3 had a wonderful day doing Maths as part of World Maths Day. We completed a range of Maths activities from Tessellations to Symetrical Patterns to Maths Football. The highlight of the day for the children was a Maths workshop with Year 8 where the older children taught the younger children about shapes and then we had an interactive quiz using the voting handsets. A big thank you to Year 8 and Mr Prestidge for making our Maths Day so much fun.

Year 3 Research in the Library

Year 3 have been learning all about information texts and how to read them. We have learnt how to use both a glossary and an index and also about diagrams or pictures and illustrations. We have started researching on a topic of our choice using the non-fiction section of the library. We have each chosen our own topic and made notes from books that we found. The final product will be a mini non-fiction book which the children will produce. Well done Year 3 for your hard work.

Year 3 Enjoying the new ICT programmes

Year 3 have been really enjoying the new 2Simple software and have really enjoyed creating leaflets or brochures about Ancient Egypt. They have been learning to write headings; change the font size and colour; copy and paste pictures from the internet; and draw pictures of objects from Ancient Egypt. Here are some pictures of us working hard in the ICT suite.

King Tutankhamen in Year 3

In Year 3 we have been learning all about the famous Pharaoh King Tutankhamen. We have found out lots of information and learned all about how his tomb was found and all of the things buried in there. We have learned about the different parts of the tomb and how hi body was prepared for the afterlife. Part of this process was to make a death mask for the mummy to wear. We then made masks of King Tutankhamen. Look at the these wonderful children.
